Landfill Construction / Erosion Control

SES provides the following services for landfills:

  • design,
  • permitting,
  • cap,
  • closure plans,
  • maintenance,
  • access roadway repairs,
  • erosion control,
  • construction of drainage channels,
  • investigation,
  • landfill gas sampling, and
  • landfill development oversight.

One of the most important parts of a closed landfill is the cap. These caps must be maintained in order to prevent erosion and stormwater ponding, which can lead to leaching and migration of contaminants. SES can prevent these types of problems by:

  • installing lined drainage channels,
  • routing surface water and subsurface groundwater away from the landfill,
  • grading the surface to eliminate depressions and provide positive drainage, and
  • developing and maintaining a protective cover of vegetation.

In addition to our landfill work, STEP has also provided earthwork services in other areas, such as along riverbanks where erosion threatens to undermine roadways and buildings, erode sensitive habitats, or cause excessive sedimentation. SES uses both structural and biological methods for erosion control. Structural measures include rock riprap, interlocking concrete blocks, gabions, geosynthetics, or formed concrete. Vegetative or biological measures include log bundles anchored to the streambank, coir fabric, and planting native grasses and shrubs that can form a protective net within the topsoil.

SES personnel install riprap along the Tennessee River. The shoreline was stabilized during low water season to protect an adjacent roadway threatened by erosion.

Our field team restored an old landfill site by regrading soil and replanting native grasses.
